Application of sealant

Modern-day fenestration solutions have come a long way from their humble origins. For instance – there was a time when single-paned glass windows had just made their debut. Today window glazing is not limited to that. Innovative glass solutions of today offer loads of functionalities – energy-efficiency, durability, strength, noise insulation, and safety.

In this guide, you can find out all about window glazing – what it is, why it is needed, its many types, and its myriads of use cases.

What is Window Glazing and Why is it Required?

Doors and windows are holes in the walls through which around 70% of heat loss takes place. Hence, the type of doors and windows you choose will greatly affect the energy-efficiency of your home.

For such purposes, window glazing is used. Window glazing is the actual glass part of modern-day windows. Installed with the assistance of a glazing putty and frame that supports the glass and holds it in place, window glazing is of different types based on varying requirements.

Types of Glazing

The following are the several types of window glazing that are available in the market –

Single Window Glazing

This is the sort of glazing that traditional windows come with. Such glazing involves a single pane of glass. Meaning, the only thing separating your space from the outside world is that glass pane.

Double Window Glazing

Double glazed windows are Insulated Glass Units (IGUs) that involve two glass panes separated from each other using a spacer having moisture absorbing desiccant or an inert gas. The window frames are made wider to accommodate the double panes.

Triple Window Glazing

Triple glazing windows are Insulated Glass Units (IGUs) that consist of three panes of glass separated from each other by a layer of noble gas such as Argon or Krypton with a thermal conductivity lower than air.

Glazing by Function

Depending upon their functional role, window glazing is available in the following types –

Thermal Insulation

Achieving energy-efficiency is not only imperative for maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures but also for reducing energy bills. And since windows are mainly responsible for heat loss, window glazing is highly efficient in heat insulation, not allowing the interior temperatures to become extreme.

Sound Insulation

Noise pollution may be an unfortunate by-product of modern life and window glazing can help with mitigating this problem. The spacer in double and triple glazed windows is highly efficient in blocking out sound waves, allowing you to enjoy peaceful and relaxing interiors.

Safety and Security

Available in two safety variants, toughened safety glass and laminated safety glass are designed to fulfil three main requirements – unmatched strength and impact-resistance, clear visibility, and minimising danger on breakage (no sharp and hazardous shards).

Applications

Double and triple window glazing finds useful applications in the following –

  • Residential Buildings
  • Corporate Offices
  • Commercial Enclaves
  • Healthcare Facilities
  • Hotels and Restaurants and
  • Educational Institutions
