Maintenance Tips for Your Home Windows

Good news! Modern-day windows for homes require very little maintenance. However, ideally, one must care for them by cleaning them at least once a month. After all, these structures award spaces with elegance and natural light. They also shower your home with heaps of fresh air. Here are a few steps to maintain your home windows without damaging them.

Step 1: Gather the Materials

The first step in caring for windows for home is collecting the right materials to clean them with. For mildly dusty windows, a proper wipe down with a damp microfiber cloth is enough. But, for windows that are heavily soiled, use warm water with a few drops of mild detergent mixed in it. So, gear up and collect these materials to begin maintaining your windows – a bucket and a mug or a garden hose, a detergent – dishwashing liquids work well here, clean warm water, a soft brush and a sponge, a microfiber cloth, grease or lubricant.

Step 2: Remove Superficial Dust

Once you have your gear in place, begin cleaning the window from top and work your way down. Cleaning the top half later will spoil the bottom half that you had cleaned earlier. To get rid of loose dust and debris, use the mug to splash water on the window. Repeat this a couple of times until all the superficial dirt starts draining towards the bottom.

Step 3: Make Water and Detergent Solution

Make a soapy solution by adding the dishwashing liquid in lukewarm water. Do not use a harsh detergent which has an alkaline PH value as that can damage the colour and finish of your window frames. Fill this solution in a spray bottle and spray it on your window frames and glass. If you don’t have a dishwashing liquid at home, you can also purchase a window cleaner from the market.

Step 4: Scrub Gently

Now that your soapy solution is ready, it is time to scrub the windows clean! Take the soft brush from your kit, dip it in the detergent solution, and gently start scrubbing the window frame. Do not use steel wool or any other abrasive material for cleaning, as that can damage the window frame colour and finish.

To get to the hard-to-reach corners of your windows for home, take an old toothbrush, dip it in the soapy solution, and get down to cleaning. After you are done scrubbing, take the soft sponge, and wipe the surface clean. Remember to put in extra effort to scrub the grooves and joints responsible for smooth operation of your windows.

Step 5: Rinse Thoroughly

Take clean water and pour it on your windows to completely rid them of the soapy solution. Remember that soap residues are sticky and collect a lot of dirt. Therefore, ensure that you drizzle water all over your windows for home until they are sparkling clean.

Step 6: Wipe Them Dry

After soaping and rinsing windows for home, wipe them dry with a soft and dry microfiber cloth. You can also use orange-coloured fabric, which is generally used to clean cars. Buff your windows up in a single direction for better shine. Make sure not to touch the glass panes of wet windows as that will leave fingerprints all over the surface.

Step 7: Apply Grease

After the windows have dried, lubricate its joints and hinges to ensure they function smoothly. You can buy these lubricants from the market or also use automotive wax. This step is often ignored by many, but lubricating joints is critical for a structure’s longevity. So, do not skip this step! If you don’t have enough time to wait around for your windows for home to dry completely, use a blow dryer to drain out excess water logged inside any metallic part.

Step 8: Inspect Windows for Dents and Cracks

Cracked or chipped panes of glass can be dangerous. Do not wait until they shatter before replacing them. Therefore, after cleaning your windows, inspect them for cracks and dents. If you find a few, get in touch with a trustworthy fenestration expert immediately for a replacement.

Over to You

You can follow all the steps mentioned above to clean windows for homes from the inside also. However, that may be difficult to manage, given this process creates a bit of a mess. Therefore, wipe the interior window panes and frames with a soft damp cloth and leave them to air dry.
